Well, I did it. I completed a first draft of a novella, sitting at about 28.5k words. Holy crap am I glad to be done with that
I started around the beginning of the year and have not allowed myself to write–or even think about–anything else. Now I am finally free. I did this to myself because I know me, and I know that if I take a ‘break’ from something, it means I never return.
So now my head is backed up with all kinds of short story ideas that I can’t wait to get started on while I let this novella ferment for a while.
As it stands, it’s packed full of plot holes, loose ends and missing links, and needs a complete rewrite before it’s even fit for editing–But, it’s done. Done enough that I can leave it be and not worry about never completing it.
I have to say I don’t think I’ll do that again any time soon. Shorts are so much more fun cause I can always be having a new idea or a new character. Doing the same thing for so long really is kind of a drag! But I’m glad I tried it once, at least, and I feel proud that I managed to stick with it till the end.
Now I think I’m going to take some of this money I got from Fireside Magazine and buy a nice bottle of scotch to celebrate!
Well done! Now take a quick break and write more of those shorts we all love!
